Reel Champs are the "Real"
champs this time! |
The Spring 2008
Season Raxx Cup Championship came
down to Da Reel Champs vs the
Summer
2007 Raxx Cup Champions Strokers.
This would be a matchup that did
not disappoint. With the new format
in the playoffs both teams would
play all their players in 4 matches,
two games of 8-Ball and two games
of 9-Ball. The first team to 41
points wins the Raxx Cup Championship.
The first match saw Ed Cummings
vs Craig Kottick. Craig has really
picked up his game lately and
has been playing better than ever.
The game was 9-Ball Ed Cummings
would be no match for the hot
shooting Craig as Craig cruised
to a 7-3 victory and a 14-6 point
lead.
The next match up saw Da Reel
Champs Team MVP Luigi Stolfa vs
Bob Bevers from Strokers and the
game was 8-Ball. Bob needed 59
points to Luigi's 62. After 4
racks the match was neck and neck
as
Luigi held a slight lead 27-23.
Luigi would then turn up his game
a little and start to pull away
as he increased his lead to 18
after 3 more racks. With the score
at 56-38 it looked great for Luigi
and Da Reel Champs as he only
need 6 more points to win. Fortunately
for Strokers Bob Bevers had something
else in mind. He would win the
next rack holding Luigi to just
4 points making the overall score
60-48. With Bob Bevers coming
to the table with the break in
hand he would still need a miracle
to win the match. Bob studied
the break and saw that the balls
were racked on a slight angle
so he decided to give the break
all he had to try and sink the
8-Ball on the break for the win.
Bob broke the balls and the 8-Ball
went flying out of the pack and
just missed falling in the side
pocket. The 8-Ball would then
bounce off the rail of the left
side pocket and head toward the
right side pocket. Slowly it travelled
to the lip of the
pocket and fell in. Strokers roared
as the 8-Ball fell into the side
pocket and Strokers roared back
into the match. The win gave Strokers
11 points and the overall score
was now 23-17.
The third match saw veterans Gary
Magazzu of Strokers vs Duane Jerry
of Da Reel Champs. The game was
9-ball and Duane would be getting
the 8 from Gary. Duane played
his best game of the season easily
defeating Duane 6-2 giving Da
Reel Champs a large 37-23 point
lead.
The final match would see both
team captains, Pat Byrne of Strokers
vs Jesse Thomas of Da Reel
Champs. The game was 8-Ball and
Jesse only needed 38 points to
Pat Byrnes 67 points to secure
the match and the Raxx Cup Trophy.
Pat Byrne missed a couple of easy
shots which would have given him
the large lead he needed to give
Strokers a fighting chance. Jesse
Thomas would capitalize on Pat's
errors and with Jesse only needing
3 more points Pat conceeded the
match and Da Reel Champs would
win the Raxx Cup Championship
for the first time under their
new name.
Last season Da Reel Champs previously
known as Cut Throat would finish
a disappointing second place in
the finals last season and thus
changed their name to Da Reel
Champs vowing to win the Raxx
Cup in their following season
and they did just that. Congratulations!
